The 2026 Husqvarna British Masters begins today at The Belfry Hotel and Resort in Sutton Coldfield — hosted by six-time Major champion Sir Nick Faldo and broadcast live on Sky Sports Golf. The world’s top DP World Tour players take on the Brabazon Course across four days of championship golf, competing for a $3.5 million prize fund and a critical 5,000 Race to Dubai points.

However, long before Patrick Reed, Tyrrell Hatton, Danny Willett and the rest of the field tee off this morning, an extraordinary engineering and agronomic operation has been underway — preparing a course that must perform to the highest standards in professional golf, day after day, regardless of weather, footfall or playing conditions.

The Brabazon — An Engineering Legacy

The Brabazon Course is one of the most recognisable golf venues in Europe. Designed by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas, it is a par 72 measuring 7,253 yards. The Engineering of Tournament Preparation

Preparing The Belfry for a DP World Tour event is a months-long engineering programme. However, the most remarkable aspect of the 2026 tournament preparation is the technology at its heart — autonomous robotic mowing systems operating on a scale that would have been impossible just a few years ago.

Furthermore, the robotic mowers work to GPS-defined cutting boundaries — following programmed paths with centimetre accuracy. Each machine delivers consistent cut quality across its designated area regardless of operator skill or fatigue. Consequently, the fairway surfaces players experience on day four of the tournament are as consistent as those on day one — something that manual mowing programmes struggle to achieve under the physical demands of a four-day tournament schedule.

Greens Engineering — Where Championships Are Won and Lost

The putting surfaces at a DP World Tour event represent the most demanding engineering specification on the course. The Brabazon’s Bent/Poa greens must deliver consistent pace, true roll and predictable ball behaviour — across 18 holes, for four competitive days, under the feet of thousands of spectators and the scrutiny of the world’s best players.

Green speed is one of the most closely managed parameters in tournament preparation. Course management teams adjust mowing height — to within fractions of a millimetre — rolling frequency, irrigation timing and fertiliser application in response to weather conditions, soil moisture data and temperature forecasts. Moreover, the relationship between firmness and pace is a constant engineering balance. Firm, fast greens favour the most accurate ball strikers — as historical winners at The Belfry, including Lee Westwood, Paul Casey, Henrik Stenson and Colin Montgomerie, all demonstrate. Furthermore, the greens here are noted for being relatively straightforward to read — making green speed and approach shot precision the decisive variables.
